What is a Moroccan hammam?

Step into the serene world of the Moroccan hammam, where centuries-old rituals meet contemporary luxury. From the warmth of the steam to the invigorating exfoliation, each step of this journey is designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. This body treatment makes itself known around the world for being a relaxing and cleansing ritual that is centuries old and as part to Moroccan life as tagine and mint tea. In the hammam, your whole body is cleansed, exfoliated, and nourished. The session takes place in a water steam chamber, where a Tellak, a hammam attendant, will give you a traditional Moroccan hammam experience.

Bit of history: From Roman baths to hammams in Marrakech

Bit of history: From Roman baths to hammams in Marrakech

The concept of public baths was created by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago. Citizens were encouraged to visit their local bathhouse in order to clean themselves and maintain good hygiene. The practice caught on with the rest of the world, with Morocco being one of the first countries to embrace this way of bathing. Beyond a simple bathing ritual, hammams in Morocco have long been refined sanctuaries of relaxation and connection, where tradition meets well-being in an atmosphere of understated elegance. The sessions where done entirely naked, and the baths were separated by gender.

Traditionally, visitors to the hammam would first visit the souk to purchase their own bathing essentials. Today, modern hammams in Marrakech and elsewhere provide all the necessary products. Attending a hammam remains highly prevalent in Moroccan culture, with many Moroccans still partaking in baths on a weekly basis. Now it is more common to see unisex hammams in Marrakech which means a bathrobe or swimwear is necessary to maintain privacy.

The Moroccan hammam experience : A relaxing spa routine

Step into a world of indulgence and tradition with a Moroccan hammam ritual—an age-old luxury reinterpreted in Marrakech’s finest spas and private villas.

Step 1: Forget your shame and complexes

Nobody will judge you or your body here. Hammams in Morocco are spaces of acceptance and relaxation.

Step 2: Prepare to undress

Depending on the establishment, you may wear a swimsuit, a bathrobe, or undress entirely.

Step 3: Enter the steam room

The Tellak will guide you into a hot, steamy room. Your first job here is to sit back and relax. The steam will start to open your pores, preparing your body for the head to toe cleansing process. A few deep breaths will help you let go of all the stress you have accumulated wandering through the vibrant souks.

Step 4: The black soap treatment

After a while, the attendant will return with a bowl of Moroccan black soap, a natural, olive-based soap, and will apply it to your skin. This soap softens the skin and prepares it for exfoliation. After application, take a few minutes to relax and let the soap work its magic.

Step 5: Rinse off the soap

The attendant will pour buckets of warm water over your legs, feet, back, and face to rinse off the soap, leaving your skin refreshed.

Step 6: The Kessa glove body scrub

This step is the heart of the traditional Moroccan hammam experience. The Tellak will give you a full body scrubbing with a Kessa glove to rub away dead skin cells, unclog pores, and leave your skin glowing. This deep exfoliation is invigorating and leaves you feeling brand new.

Step 7: Cool shower

After the heat and exfoliation, a shower of cold water helps stimulate your body and wash away all impurities.

Step 8: Indulge in aromatherapy and a massage

To end the session in perfect Moroccan style, enjoy a cup of Moroccan mint tea while relaxing with sandalwood aromatherapy. If you want a complete spa experience, opt for a royal massage with argan oil, which hydrates and nourishes your skin.

“We like the beautiful setting of the villa Ozin - spacious sitting room and outdoor sitting areas. The swimming pool is nice and big. The garden is well looked after. The staff are very friendly but discreet. The food (lamb & chicken) is delicious but they need to introduce variety of the food as we had most of our meals at the Villa. If they could cook more fish, prawns, calarami etc... ” - Xiaodi B.
